Hot Topics: Human Trafficking

Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

Psalm 82:3 (ESV)

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Proverbs 31:8-9 (ESV)

Human trafficking is a tragedy: an egregiously growing pandemic. People are stolen, manhandled, and sold like dolls in a warehouse… LITERALLY.

Estimates of modern-day slavery top 50 million. One in four are kids being forced into the sex industry. Their childhood is ravaged… LITERALLY.

Slavery isn’t limited to “slums” or what rich nations call “third world countries”.

Modern slavery is a pervasive global issue found in every country, regardless of its wealth. It is present in various forms across all continents. It is often hidden in plain sight, in industries like agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and domestic work, as well as in forced marriages and sexual exploitation. (Google AI summary)

Merciless captors rarely look like thugs. Most appear to be upscale businessmen. But behind closed doors, brutality reigns.

Meanwhile, Christians and most “normal” people…

Can hardly bear to consider this pain. So we don't. We protect our small bubbles. We hang out with friends and do “normal” things.

We cling to imaginary heroes…. instead of becoming the action stars God has called and commissioned us to be.

But here’s the minimum we ought to do:

  • We can learn about human trafficking and find ways we may be able to help.

  • We can stay aware of our surroundings and report suspicious circumstances.

  • We can speak to the sad souls in our paths*, rather than pretending we don’t see them.

  • We can donate or volunteer to help charities dedicated to this cause.

  • We can denounce lewd sexual humor that dehumanizes people as pawns.

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

God created you to be role models of how to live a bright and joyful life. That being said, don’t get “caught” by the light. Do imitate Christ and become the light.

Do shine God’s light on this dire circumstance and always pause to lift the downtrodden.

* A neighbor does not have to live in your neighborhood. It might be someone you sit by on a train, a bench, or in an airport. It might be someone in a grocery store. One way or another, God has brought this person to your attention. Lives have been saved by Good Samaritans who were willing to get involved.

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If what I write is good, it’s from God! We’re all called to be actors (action stars) for Jesus. We’re all called to be models of Jesus. We all have gifts, talents, and a commission to multiply them in the world for His glory.

P.S. NO DEVOTION, PREACHER, or SERMON… can begin to replace personal time in the Bible. I wholeheartedly and clear-headedly recommend DAILY BIBLE READING.

WARNING: Don’t focus on your favorite verses, because taken out of context, they’re often misinterpreted. I plead with you to READ AT LEAST 1 BIBLE CHAPTER DAILY. How long does it take? An average of 5 to 10 minutes!
