Suffering: Dirty Jobs, Like Rahab

Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them…

In a fun TV show called “Dirty Jobs,” we get to see jobs most people avoid, but (thank God) others are willing to take. Praise God for all the unsung laborers, working needful, but “unattractive” jobs.

Today’s devotion is about Rahab, one of the foremothers of Jesus, with a different kind of dirty job: one Christians label as despicable.

SIDEBAR: What if a barely clothed, garishly styled, lady of the night walked into your church? Would she be warmly welcomed among you? What if this “showy” lady was coerced into an awful job and gotten stuck? What if she’s a heroine in disguise, just waiting for her moment to step free?

Actors, models, and talent for Christ:

Let’s learn to see people with dirty jobs, especially the ones Christians condemn, with eyes of COMPASSION, like Jesus did.

Is the avoidable filth of our dirty world easier to clean away… than the disdain of smug, religious pride?

Because…

No job can be dirtier than the job of judging and condemning someone else. If the Lord placed a foreign prostitute as a direct ancestor of Jesus, then He clearly looks beyond externals… straight into the heart of each one of us.

NOTE: God is my Ghostwriter. If what I write is good, it’s from God! We’re ALL called to be actors (action stars) for Jesus. We’re ALL called to models of Jesus, and we ALL have gifts, talents, and callings from God–  to multiply them in the world for His glory.

P.S. NO DEVOTION, PREACHER, or SERMON… can begin to replace personal time in the Bible. I wholeheartedly and clear-headedly recommend READING THE BIBLE DAILY.

WARNING: Don’t focus on favorite verses, because out of context, they’re often misinterpreted. I plead with you to READ AT LEAST 1 BIBLE CHAPTER DAILY. How long does it take? An average of 5 to 10 minutes!
