Christian Pitfalls: Big Talk

Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.

  • Big talk is a wimp seeking approval.

  • Big talk is a spin-the-tale publicist.

  • Big talk is a hater seeking groupies.

  • Big talk is a disconnected preacher…

  • Because the Lord speaks in a still, small Voice.

Big talk’s goals are power and advancement. Its pretensions are pride and “puffery,” and its enemy is humility. On the other Hand,

Avoid BIG talk & reject BIG talkers!!

  • 'For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh' (2 Peter 2:18).

  • 'A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet' (Proverbs 29:5).

  • ‘Know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!' (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Remember: big talk is a two-way trap. Either action will trip your Christian walk:

  1. Speaking it, or…

  2. Believing it.

The no-fail way to escape and advance? 'Humble yourselves under the mighty Hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time' (1 Peter 5:6).
