God’s Diplomats: Politics

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed.

Romans 13:1-2 (ESV)

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 (ESV)

For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed.

1 Peter 2:13-14 (NLT)

Remind the believers to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good.

Titus 3:1 (NLT)

Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:20 (ESV)

Ambassadors are into politics. Right? Not exactly…

  • Although we ARE official messengers and representatives of King Jesus,

  • Although we ARE God’s diplomatic corps sent to share the Good News of our Homeland…

We can’t condemn the local government.

While we may have temporary visas, and we’ve spent lots of time with the locals… we can’t forget that Heaven is our home, and we’re going back… when God says we’re done.

CONSIDER: What if an American diplomat on assignment in a foreign country… spoke hateful words or held up picket signs condemning the laws they feel are unjust?

  1. It’s not their business. (God appoints leaders.)

  2. They seem like bigots. (God isn’t partial.)

  3. They may be kicked out. (They repped God poorly)

  4. Their mission has failed. (Love, peace and kindness)

Here’s my big concern: When Christian’s big concerns are POLITICS, and they speak great swelling words of anger, they disobey their Sovereign’s Orders.

This world, where we temporarily live, WON’T be set straight until Jesus comes back.

In the meantime, we’re called to find lost sheep: children of God, who’ve forgotten His way, but need the light, love, and truth we carry. Isn’t that our job?

Actors, models, and talent for Christ: Your work is desperately important. In your public media positions, your presence is like a homing beacon, attracting the lonely to follow you.

So don’t strike out (as other Christians do) by involving yourself in politics or fruitless debates on passionate points.
