Is Celebrity Toxic? Arrogance

Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord.

Proverbs 16:5 (NKJV)

Before I point my arrogant finger at puffed-up Hollywood celebrities… (or any other pompous paraders), I’ll point to my own WRONG self-righteousness. I’ve been proud, and it’s still a temptation.

Thank God for Jesus and His Example. I’m a humility work in progress.

This being noted, some celebrities,
People with enormous sway over kids,
People that stargazers often copy…
Flaunt their arrogance like a sparkling crown:

‘I'm the No. 1 artist in the world right now ... I am the No. 1 human being in music.’ (Kanye West, Ye)

'He is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words' (1 Timothy 6:4).

‘In this world, I call the shots and I think I know best.' (Mariah Carey)

'By Myself, I can do nothing' (Jesus in John 5:30). His advice? 'Do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight' (Proverbs 3:5-6).

'I am a marketing genius.' (Paris Hilton)

'The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, 'He catches the wise in their own craftiness' ' (1 Corinthians 3:19).

'McDonald's market share went up 25 percent when I walked into those offices and changed their image.' (Justin Timberlake)

'Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God Who knows, and by Him, deeds are weighed' (1 Samuel 2:3).

'Some people are just born stars... and I was definitely born one' (Lady Gaga).

'For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself' (Galatians 6:3).

'I'm an ocean, because I'm really deep. If you search deep enough you can find rare exotic treasures... I deserve that Grammy' (Christina Aguilera).

'I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle' (The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:9).

What's the ONE antidote for arrogance?

In a hard-to-accomplish word and act: HUMILITY. 'A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor' (Proverbs 29:23). Therefore, 'Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honor' (James 4:10). 'For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?' (Mark 8:36).

NOTE: This is a 2023 update of a 2013 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.
